Five Fridays #25 – “Free” Scrappy Tools

If you’re not counting your pennies these days, then you’re one of the lucky few. Most of us have felt the pinch of the “economy” in one way or another. Here are some “free” ideas to help you weather this slump and create beautiful pages in the process:

Homemade stamps. You’ve probably seen it before—dip a cup rim in paint and then use it to stamp circles. Pretty cool, huh? Well, my layout needed some glitter so I got a water bottle cap, Zyrtec medicine bottle cap, and the cap from a paint dauber.

I dipped them into glue and then stamped circles on my page:

I added glitter to each circle as I stamped

Here is the finished page:

Create things from your scraps. Make punchies (circles are good for journaling spots later on), titles, or cards for future pages from your scraps. You’ll have more time to create and you’ll get a lot more mileage out of your paper versus throwing away scraps or stockpiling them in files at home.

Share with friends. You know you still want that latest greatest super cool new gadget for scrapping. Pool your resources with friends and either buy one together or agree to share at crops. Get together once a month at your LSS to crop (or at home if you don’t have a local scrapbook store) and have each person agree to bring one big tool (Revolution, Slice, Wishblade, Cricut, Big Bite, Bind It All, etc). That way you can still use it without having each person in your group buy the same tool for themselves.

Create your own templates. Use a dinner plate like I did on this layout to create a circle:

You can view a whole tutorial about this technique HERE. Have a candle stick or lamp with a cool base? Trace it to make your own unique "diecut" paper.

Texture. Marianne Walker of Copic has a little swatch of terry cloth she calls "Dirty Old Rag". What's it for? She puts ink from Copic markers on it and dabs to create a fun texture. You can do the same thing with old towels (they don't have to be "dirty" LOL) you have at home--use paint to dab on a textured pattern. How about glimmer misting a page and then dabbing with a towel afterwards to create a sandy texture (think beach pages with Glimmer Mists in brown!!)? You can do the same with textured paper towels--I love the diamond pattern on Bounty paper towels. How about using the texture of a sink mat or old plastic bath mat to create texture? A smashed basket can be used to make texture by rolling it across paint. Use the bag from your avocados or other produce (those crocheted net bags) as a mask--paint over it on the page and peel up to reveal the pattern. There are lots of fun things you can do with stuff you would throw away anyways.

Hope those ideas inspire you as we are coming out of April and into National Scrapbook Day Weekend! I won't be around much because I will traveling from store to store doing lots of make n takes. I hope to see you around!!

Happy Creating!

So Much to Tell You!

First, this past Sunday I got Copic Certified!! Check it out--I am listed on the Copic Instructor Page!! That means I now know everything there is to know (let' hope I retained it all) about Copic Markers. I've been using them for some time but now I discovered I was doing it "wrong." Now that I have been educated and cannot WAIT to show you all that I learned. My first workshop is already booked:

May 17, 2009 at The Scrappin' Table

So make sure you check it out!!!

On Saturday (back tracking here) I went to the Lucky 13 Circle Journal Project Crop down in San Diego. It was so much fun to hang out with everyone in person. Some of us already know each other and are friends and others we are just getting to know each other throgh this wonderful artistic journey. There are some super talented ladies in this group, all with their own unique style, and I feel very privileged to be included in the group. Intimidated sometimes but still very happy! LOL We created ATCs to trade with one another so here are some photos of the ATCs of the ladies here in So Cal (we'll be mailing them out to the other 7 Lucky 13 spread out across the globe). In case you don't know what I am talking about, you can check out our blog here.

Candace McLean's ATCS -- painted with lots of texture and depth

Angela Daniels creted ATCs from 100% recycled materials!

Here are mine--I just used some of my favorite colors and things (Glimmer Mist, Fiskars border punches, and dingle balls! LOL)

Jane did an artsy take--love the crackled background!

Cheryl Waters --lots of feather and bling!

Gloria King did handpainted ATCs!

Melanie cut out pics of Grace Kelly to adorn her elegant ATCs

Elena and Candace got us these cut e Xmas ornaments!!

Here's Elena's -- it's a playing card!

If you haven't read the Lucky 13 blog in a while, there is ALOT of new stuff on there so go check it out! Link is above.

I also taught a couple classes last week.

"Go Green" was on April 23, 2009 at Pink Pineapple Scrabpooks in Vista, CA.

The class featured lots of fun recycled elements, including paper from Jillibean Soup as well as plastic clamshell pakcaging I have been saving for years, boxes cut up to form pages, and more fun, crazy, earthy goodness. I have ONE kit for this left--it is up in my Etsy shop if you're interested.

"So Tweet" was on April 22, 2009 at The Scrappin' Table in Placentia, CA. I didn't get any pics :( but I will be teaching it again at Pink Pineapple on May 23, 2009 if you're interested!

Okay, now back to the yard work. Xaver and I have been hard at work for over a month trying to get our front yard landscaping done. It was hilly, dead sod and weeds with lots of rocks thrown in--the paper barrier between the rock landscaping and the dirt disintegrated into a big mess so now we are trying to fix what the previous owners did. We're finding all kinds of "treasures" left there by the builders aka broken roof tiles, trash, metal strips, a big old 6" wide pipe! I am kind of pissed cuz every other shovel scoop to get the sod out we're hitting something hard (aka trash) which jarrs our shoulders and arm muscles so it is making the labor even more laborious but I am not as mad as I would be if I had bought this house new for $425K like the people before us did (we have a repo). Wow, those builders sure took alot of of shortcuts! We're putting in drought resistant plants, a retaining wall to deal with that hill, and some pavers and gravel. We are also considering a small fountain but have yet to find one we like--we will likely make our own.

Also, I have confirmed (by way of testing the if the water is on) that our nice neighbors to the north who disappeared over Christmas must be gone due to foreclosure. He told me he paid $425K for his home too. I have no idea how average people (like those of us who aren't making millions a year) could have thought they could afford that. Very sad yet perplexing to me because of people's bad decisions (like theirs) now we're all in this mess together, whether we got into a funky loan or not. Anyways, just trying to make what we have better so off to fix up our yard! Maybe I'll pull some weeds from the neighbor's yard too...

Happy Creating!

Hi Jen, The name of your Etsy store is Hydrangea Hippo & heres the story behind the name...you and some girls from the fantasyland crop for kids were heading over to the pink pineapple in vista, & started talking about if you had a scrapbook store what you would name it & you said Hydrangea Hippo...because it had a ring to it & it started out as a joke but ended up naming your blog & etsy store it. You also went on to mention that you don't even like hippos or the color purple. You also went on to stay how you made the hippo..I hope i win this one.
